Christians in Former-Soviet Central Asian Nations Increasingly Face Persecution

The plight of Christians in Central Asia’s former Soviet states—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—paints a sobering picture, as detailed in the ICC’s June 12, 2025, report. This continent’s blend of post-Soviet authoritarianism and rising Islamic nationalism has intensified repression, pushing nations like Kyrgyzstan back onto the Open Doors Top 50 persecution list after a decade’s reprieve. Harsh laws, such as Kyrgyzstan’s new constitution criminalizing public assembly and stringent church registration rules requiring 500 adult nationals, choke Christian expression. Tajikistan’s seizure of a Baptist church camp for a presidential retreat and the violent murder of a pastor underscore the stakes.

Fariza Gulomikova, a Tajik convert now in New York, highlights how Protestant churchesseen as Western influences—are targeted with surveillance, raids, and bribes, unlike the tolerated Russian Orthodox majority. Her own faith journey, sparked at that confiscated camp, reflects a personal cost mirrored across the region, where converts face banishment or family imprisonment. The shift toward Sunni Islam, coupled with governments’ fear of radicalization akin to Afghanistan, fuels a secular-Muslim identity enforced through cyber surveillance and journalist imprisonments.

Amid this oppression, an underground Christian spirit persists, though joy is tempered by fear. Central Asia’s isolation amplifies these struggles, often unnoticed globally. The resilience of these believers calls for international advocacy to challenge restrictive laws and protect their rights, ensuring their voices rise above the region’s repressive silence.

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12
