Israel has successfully deployed and activated a new Barak MX air defense system to bolster Cyprus’s defenses against potential Turkish aggression, according to a joint statement from the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the Cypriot government. The system, reported by The Jerusalem Post, enhances the island’s protection amid heightened tensions with Turkey, marking the second such deployment since December 2024.
The Barak MX, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), features a state-of-the-art radar, an advanced radio frequency seeker, and a dedicated command console, providing all-weather, 360-degree aerial defense against a range of threats, including aircraft, drones, missiles, and naval targets. This modular system, capable of engaging multiple simultaneous threats up to 150 km away, strengthens Cyprus’s strategic position in the eastern Mediterranean. The deployment follows a provocative 2024 article by former IAI vice president Shay Gal, advocating military action to “liberate” northern Cyprus from Turkish forces, which has fueled regional unease.
