Dublin – On October 22, 2025, Dublin’s streets boiled over with fury for the second consecutive night as protesters clashed with police outside the Holiday Inn Hotel in Drumcondra, home to 80 asylum seekers. A police car was torched, marking the escalation of unrest triggered by the arrest of a 31-year-old Algerian man accused of raping a 10-year-old Irish girl at the same location on October 20. The suspect, identified as a migrant housed in the facility, was charged with rape and sexual assault, igniting outrage among locals who view the incident as emblematic of broader immigration concerns.
The protests, initially peaceful, turned chaotic as demonstrators hurled fireworks, bottles, and abuse at Garda officers, who responded with pepper spray and batons. Videos showed masked rioters smashing windows and setting fires, with chants of “Get them out” echoing through the night. Over 20 arrests were made, including for arson and public order offenses, as the standoff lasted hours into the early morning.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris condemned the violence, stating, “There is no place for racism or thuggery in our society,” while acknowledging community frustrations. The hotel, a former Holiday Inn converted into an asylum center, has been a flashpoint, with locals protesting overcrowding and security lapses.
