The Israeli Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, announced the completion of the high-power laser system’s development, ahead of its scheduled delivery for operational use by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The breakthrough, detailed in a joint statement, marks a significant advancement in Israel’s air defense capabilities, with the system poised to enhance protection against rockets, drones, and missiles.
The laser, part of the Iron Beam project, has undergone rigorous testing, demonstrating its ability to intercept threats at a fraction of traditional missile defense costs. Defense Minister Israel Katz hailed the achievement as a “game-changer,” noting its potential to revolutionize warfare. Rafael’s CEO, Yoav Tourgeman, emphasized the system’s readiness, with production ramping up for deployment by year-end. This development follows Israel’s successful use of a lower-powered laser against Hezbollah drones in 2024, signaling a new era in defense technology.
