A huge sinkhole opened this morning on a bustling main street in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, disrupting traffic and prompting evacuations. The incident, reported by The Nation Thailand, occurred at approximately 8:00 AM local time (9:00 PM PST) on Samsen Road near Vajira Hospital, where a 50-meter-deep crater swallowed parts of the roadway, damaging three vehicles and forcing the closure of outpatient services at the hospital for two days.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed the sinkhole was likely caused by construction work for the MRT Purple Line extension, with 1,500 tonnes of concrete poured to stabilize the site after a 50-centimeter soil slide overnight. Emergency crews worked to secure the area, cutting electricity and water as a precaution, amid fears of further collapse with heavy rain forecast. No casualties were reported, but the incident echoes a similar event on September 24, 2025, in the same district.
