Massive Explosion at Tennessee Military Explosives Plant Leaves 18 Missing, Multiple Dead

McEwen, Tennessee – A catastrophic explosion at the Accurate Energetic Systems military explosives plant in rural Tennessee on October 10, 2025, left 18 people missing and feared dead, with multiple fatalities confirmed among the 75 employees. The blast, described as “devastating” by Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, obliterated the facility on the Hickman-Humphreys county line, rattling homes miles away and sending debris across 1,200 acres.

The plant, a key supplier of explosives for the U.S. military and foreign customers, had recently secured a $120 million Pentagon contract for 155 mm artillery shells used in Ukraine. The explosion, felt as far as 21 miles away in Lobelville, caused secondary blasts and a massive plume of smoke, with residents reporting shattered windows and structural damage. Emergency responders, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are investigating the cause, though a 2014 incident at the same site killed one and injured three.

Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Kristin Coulter noted no numbers are shared until the state health department confirms casualties. Families of the missing, including production supervisor Melissa Dawn Stanford, await news, while a vigil was held Friday evening. Hickman County Sheriff J. Craft called it “one of the most devastating situations” he’s seen.

The plant’s history of safety issues, including TOSHA fines, has raised questions about regulations. As search efforts continue, the community mourns, with a painted road divider reading “Prayers for the families.”
