Hamas Official Rejects Disarmament, Open to 3-5 Year Ceasefire

Rejects Disarmament

Mohammad Nazzal, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, told Reuters that the group cannot agree to disarmament, stating the matter depends on the broader context of negotiations and the stance of other Palestinian factions. “I cannot say yes or no. It depends on the overall project – and to whom the weapons are supposed to be handed over,” Nazzal said.

Nazzal added that Hamas is prepared to accept a temporary ceasefire of three to five years to allow for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, but emphasized that disarmament is not on the table. This comes amid U.S.-brokered talks under President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which includes a ceasefire, hostage release, and Gaza reconstruction, but requires Hamas’s full disarmament.
