Genome of Ancient Egyptian Man Reveals Regional Connections

Genome of Ancient Egyptian Man

Researchers have sequenced the genome of a man from ancient Egypt, dated to 2855–2570 BC, whose remains were found in a pot at Nuwayrat, near Beni Hasan, 165 miles south of Cairo (see here). The genetic analysis shows 80% North African ancestry and 20% from the Fertile Crescent, including Mesopotamia. This individual lived shortly after Egypt’s unification, during the transition from the Early Dynastic Period to the Old Kingdom. The findings confirm human migration and contact between Egypt and Mesopotamia, supporting biblical references to cultural exchanges, such as Abraham’s journey from Ur in Mesopotamia to Canaan and Egypt (Genesis 11:31–12:16).
