Deadly Car Ramming and Stabbing Attack Outside Manchester Synagogue on Yom Kippur

Manchester, England – On October 2, 2025, a horrific car ramming and stabbing attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester left two dead and several injured on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The assailant, Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, drove a car into pedestrians, killing one on the spot, before stabbing a security guard and being shot dead by armed police who rushed to the scene.

Initial reports indicate Al-Shamie was on bail after a rape arrest and had not been charged with that offense. Tragically, one of the victims, a bystander, was accidentally shot by officers attempting to stop the attacker. The UK’s Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood visited the site, calling it a “senseless act of violence.” Police are investigating the motive, with fears it may be antisemitic given the timing on Yom Kippur, when many Jews were gathered for prayer.

The attack has rattled the Jewish community, coming amid a rise in antisemitic incidents in the UK. A survivor described the chaos: “It was terrifying; we were just leaving services when the car came at us.” Authorities have increased security at Jewish sites nationwide.
