Abu Dhabi – March 2026 The United Arab Emirates is actively lobbying for the creation of a multinational naval task force to reopen and secure the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran’s threats and actions have severely disrupted one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

According to diplomatic sources, the UAE is not only willing to commit its own navy to the operation but is also reaching out to allies and the United Nations for broader international support. The initiative aims to guarantee safe passage for commercial shipping through the strait, which handles approximately 20% of global seaborne oil trade.

So far, only Bahrain has publicly backed the UAE’s proposal. Other Gulf states and international partners remain cautious, concerned about the risk of direct confrontation with Iran and the potential for further escalation.

The push comes as oil prices remain highly volatile following repeated Iranian threats to close the strait and amid ongoing U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iranian targets.
