On August 29, 2025, an estimated 50,000 people filled the Western Wall Plaza in Jerusalem for the second Selichot event of the season, a powerful gathering of penitential prayers ahead of Yom Kippur. The crowd, led by Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, joined in unified supplication for the return of the 50 remaining hostages held in Gaza, the safety of Israel’s soldiers and wounded, and peace and security for the nation. Selichot, meaning “forgiveness,” embodies the Jewish tradition of seeking divine mercy for national sins during the Hebrew month of Elul. Amid ongoing conflict, this massive turnout—bolstered by families of hostages and former captives like Keith Siegel—reflects Israel’s collective resolve and spiritual strength in the face of adversity.
